How to Handle Upcoming Events When You Want to Lose Weight

| Thursday February 13

If you are trying to lose weight, an invite to an event might make you feel nervous, anxious and doubtful. Yes, that means trays and tables full of wine and delicious food.

If you want to get in control of your eating at these events I have some practical ideas to get you started.

It’s possible that you could go to an event and plan ahead of time what you are going to eat and do just that. It’s possible that you could go to an event and not eat anything. It’s possible that you could eat until you feel satiated and then stop (even though there is an endless supply of hors d’oeuvres floating past you).

The key to this is planning ahead of time. Deciding at the moment what you are going to do means you have to rely on your primitive brain. If you haven’t heard me talk about it before, it’s the part of the brain which concerns itself with your survival. That part of your brain says “hungry, must eat food to stay alive”. Instead of relying on your primitive brain, use your higher brain to rationalise. Your higher brain is engaged when you plan ahead of time.

Planning ahead of time is key to your success. Plan and commit to following the plan. I want to warn you, your primitive brain is going to have a tantrum. It’s going to shout “hungry, must eat food to stay alive” very loudly. But you can choose ahead of time to not listen. You can expect to feel the urge to eat and simply follow your plan not to. Your primitive brain may also tell you “you are crazy”, “people are going to judge you” or “just one more won’t hurt you”. Expect that too… At the moment, your only job is to honour your commitment to you, because YOU MATTER! Remember that you want to follow your plan and you are choosing to follow your plan.

When you keep your word to yourself, you start creating a relationship of trust with yourself. When you can build a trusting relationship with yourself, weight loss is not only possible, it’s inevitable.

So go ahead and write down your plan. If you want a worksheet to help you do this, email me at nicky@nickyhammond.com and I’ll send you my Upcoming Events worksheet so you can work on losing weight.
