The Importance of Planning for Aged Care

| Monday January 18

With our ever-increasing ageing population, it is becoming more important to be aware of and plan for not only retirement but for future age care options. Planning ahead will allow for more time to find the options that best suit your preferences, budget and importantly, care needs.

In the context of Residential Aged Care, time is ideally needed to arrange care assessment, address the issue of how to best fund the costs of care and may be required in waiting for a vacancy within your preferred facility. In relation to independent living options, planning ahead will likely give you a greater chance of securing accommodation that may best fit with your requirements, as appropriate accommodation in an established village, for example, may only come to the market sporadically or you may wish to buy into a new development. In relation to a Commonwealth Home Care Package, it may take many months to be allocated a package, so this process should ideally be started early if care needs arise and you wish to remain living in your existing home.

With time and planning, all options and costs can be carefully considered. This may include the need to consider the sale of the home and the associated issues that come with downsizing.
